Leica Abandons Film Cameras

Leica Abandons Film Cameras

The world’s premiere maker of top quality rangefinders and lenses finally ceases production of film cameras. “There isn’t enough demand for film cameras,” states Andreas Kaufmann, Leica’s majority owner. This is really a big blow to a number of purists who have been supporting the brand for decades. It also doesn’t help that prices of second-hand film Leicas have been dropping in recent years. According to Kaufmann, they will just focus on developing their digital line and venture into manufacturing lens for movie cameras. I sure hope they factor in 3D lenses in their lens line up.

Leica O-series (1923-24) - Pre-mass production Leica camera

Leica I - the first 35mm still camera

Leica M3 (1954) - The first of the M series

It sure is disappointing that more and more companies are abandoning future development for film cameras. But here are Leica’s new babies to keep us wanting for more.

Leica M8 (in white) - USD 10,000!

Leica S2 (medium format) - USD 30,000!

Now, if only I could afford one 🙂
